How does one decide what the most pertinent information to share with a bunch of strangers is? I guess I pick the information that will paint a picture ideally leading you take me a little bit more seriously that some 16 year old posting about the latest Glee episode or something of that nature. I  hold a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and History from the University of Calgary — naturally this would indicate that I have a strong interest in the world around me. I largely focused on international relations, comparative politics and imperialism during my studies. Presently, however, I work as a  public servant with the Government of Canada, and have taken a strong interest in re-focusing my attention towards the Canadian political system. This blog is meant firstly as a means for me to express things I otherwise may  not be able to without imploding, so generally a lot of angst driven topics, which include, but are not limited to, my views on current events, elections, etc. around the globe. Additionally, there is a lot of personal writting here mainly around things like my colourful dating life and general challenges and elations I have faced that seemed notable enough to record. I have aspirations that I will noticably see my writing skills mature along the way as well. I am also a lover of live music and awesome inner city watering holes. Besides the aforementioned I don’t really see anything else crucially important to mention, I also don’t wish to acquire e-stalkers in the creepy sense of the term thus I end my blogging justifications now before it goes too far. You might think I am kidding but the internet is serious business, fyi.

My blog isn’t play by play enough for you? I sold out to Twitter – @effyes

    Hi,
I am here because I am looking for a source for something you cited way back in 2010 in a blog titled ‘The tuition debate continues’. You stated that the University of Calgary was one of the largest Canadian investors in sub-prime mortgages and I am wondering if you may be able to give me some additional information. I am a disappointed U of C econ student doing an undergraduate project. Thanks in advance.

    1. ashleythinks Says:

Sorry for the late response, I am not on here as often as I should be. The information was first shared to our class by our history prof.

This is a link to an article about their investments from 2009

      http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/universities-seek-students-private-contracts-amid-funding-crunch-1.786332

“University of Calgary president and vice-chancellor Harvey Weingarten reported in March that his university ended 2008-09 in deficit because it had to write down its asset backed commercial paper (subprime mortgage) investments, which chopped the university’s endowment by a fifth.”
